Memorial Day is Here – Are You Ready?
The official start of summer holiday is right around the corner. In anticipation of this coming holiday weekend, we wanted to give you a few tips and tricks to stay in shape, stay healthy and stay safe!
Memorial Day usually means one thing…cookouts. While you might be salivating over the grill, be careful not to pack away more calories than needed and be conscious of hidden calories and fat.
Chips & Dips – The average cook out usually has an abundance of potato chips, corn chips, Doritos and more. If you can, try to choose baked snacks (most every major brand nowadays has a baked variety of your favorite chip) and if you simply must have the original version, try to stick with chips and salsa.
Burger’s vs. Hot Dog’s? – Unless you are sure your hot dogs are high quality and not overloaded with sodium and preservatives, opt for a hamburger but BEWARE to not go overboard on the toppings or the condiments.
Side Dishes – Who doesn’t love a good potato salad? Well, most can come in at a whopping 358 calories per serving thanks to all that mayonnaise, so try to stick to baked beans, sauerkraut or bring some of your own potato salad made with low calorie mayonnaise or a mayonnaise alternative.
To dessert of not? Yes, there is going to be ice cream and most likely other tempting and calorie laden desserts at the usual cookout. That said, there is usually watermelon and other fresh fruits or Popsicles that make a delicious and healthy alternative.
Beverages have calories too! Yes, that beer or wine counts too so be careful not to overindulge and remember that most beers now make a delicious lite alternative and that a vodka soda comes in at just under 100 calories per serving and is refreshing and light in the summer sun.
Since Memorial Day can mean a lot of time outdoors, be sure to stock up on sunscreen and reapply liberally once outdoors and remember that sun hats and sunglasses are your friends. Cookouts can also mean bugs and allergies so be sure to have some Benadryl handy and some bug spray, especially as you go into the evening.
Staying in Shape
The holidays can be hard on our fitness regime. Between the travel and the fact that we tend to be overly crammed at work to make up for the time off, finding time to keep your fitness level up to par can be difficult. Here are some ideas to that might help you stay in shape while still making the most out of your holiday.
Planning your weekend getaway? Try to incorporate being active into the holiday. Visit a winery, a city made for walking, or an outdoor venue with lots of cycling or hiking involved. If you are going to stay in a hotel during your getaway, look for one with either a gym on site, fitness classes, or a nearby gym. Just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean your fitness level should take a hit.
And don’t forget that you can keep up with your yoga practice while you’re away with My Joy Yoga!
